The symposium will focus on the political and military aspects of castles in medieval warfare, in particular during the period AD 1000–1660. Castles were strongholds of vital military importance and played a central role in the political strategies of the rulingelite. The role of castles in medieval warfare has long been considered a topic primarily for a narrow circle of specialists in military history, while historians have generally focussed on the broader social, economic and political aspects of castles and archaeologists focused on the structural aspects and excavations of particular sites. The picture is changing, however, and both historians and archaeologists are starting to recognise decisive importance of castles in medieval warfare.

O Gabinete de Filosofia Medieval/Instituto de Filosofia, em colaboração com o Centro Studi Antoniani (Pádua), a Família Franciscana Portuguesa, o Instituto de Estudos Medievais (Lisboa), o Centro de Estudos de História Religiosa (Lisboa-Porto), organiza um encontro internacional para fazer o ponto da situação sobre os estudos recentes e investigações em curso em torno da vida, pensamento e influência de Fernando Martins / Santo António (Lisboa c. 1195 - Pádua 1231).

A jornada pretende discutir os mais recentes resultados da investigação em torno de S. António de Lisboa/Pádua, nos aspetos relacionados com o conhecimento da sua vida e obra, e a devoção na Idade Média e na cultura popular. Os participantes na jornada apresentarão os resultados da sua investigação pessoal e da mais recente historiografia, sobretudo desde o grande congresso Pensamento e testemunho de 1985, mas também novos tópicos para o estudo da figura de António. A jornada é também um momento de contacto internacional entre instituições e grupos de investigação envolvidos neste campo de estudos, na perspetiva do alargamentos dos seus interesses comuns.

The workshop aim is to present the most recent results of research on saint Anthony of Lisbon. It will focus on different aspects of his figure, from life and work to devotion in the Middle Ages and in popular culture. In a one day workshop, the participants will present either the results of the newest historiography, moving basically from the years that followed the big congress Pensamento e Testemunho in 1995, either to introduce new topics for the study of Saint Anthony's figure. Moreover, the participants are asked to activate, or better reactivate a connection among their institutions and the Gabinete de Filosofia Medievale of Porto to improve the internationalization of this field of study in a prospective of enlargement of common interests.
